The British Hen Welfare Trust
Ever since 2005 the British Hen Welfare Trust has been saving commercial laying hens from slaughter and rehoming them as family pets throughout the UK. The BHWT designed and developed the existing rehoming model, rehoming from more than 45 sites with the kind support of more than 1,000 volunteers who have to date rehomed over 850,000 hens.
Jane Howorth MBE, founder of the BHWT, says, “Time and time again, the feedback we have from people who rehome our hens is how much they love them… they get to see them flourish into endearing, funny little creatures and they are, in essence, life enriching.”
As well as being known for its rehoming work, the charity campaigns for better welfare through working with a wide range of stakeholders including the egg industry, veterinary profession and government agencies – all for the greater good of hens.
